I moved into my flat in Enniscrone on Sunday 3rd September. I remember it was a really nice day (despite my hangover in the car on the way down) and I was looking forward to starting 'work'. There was a misunderstanding at the very beginning which was an early indication of how things operated in the company. The Product Manager knew that I was coming, but had never seen my CV and wasn't informed that I was just an undergraduate on a year's placement. This lack of communication between Dublin (Head office) and Sligo will be a recurring theme throughout my 'diary'. I was quickly given an overview of the companies' flagship product "Mission Control". Exactly what it is is still being debated througout the company, but I'll post the definitive description once there is one. Assigned to investigate WAP Gateways, I began downloading demo versions and various WAP toolkits. All very exciting stuff for a student!
I was there a whole 4 days before someone asked me out for a pint. I remember being advised on that Thursday night that I was coming in too early in the mornings, and could I please stop it. I duely obliged.
My brother and girlfriend visited me the first weekend I was down there. I should have started charging Colleen rent then, since she would be a frequent lodger in the coming months.
Alan, my new flatmate, moved in the same weekend that Rory and Colleen were down. I was shocked that Alan didn't have any noticeable accent, until I discovered that the reason he "spoke properly" was because he is from Donegal, and studied at Magee in Derry.
Although I felt out of my depth and was a bit annoyed that there was no real training or induction, I enjoyed the work I was doing and found it interesting. I began downloading tutorials for later use - but 'later' never came, and I still have a huge stockpile of stuff I'm trying to wade through. There seems to be so much that I don't know about...
